Two Underground London Jazzfloor hits from Paul Murphy's Jazz Room Records.

On the A side Latin Supergroup Walpataca's wild and infectious "Caliente" with Paquito's Banging piano riffs and heavy Bass Line action from Descarga originator Cachao overlaid with Driving Vibes from Tany Gil and a Percussion Meltdown from Walfredo De Los Reyes.

On the B side the Vienna Art Orchestra provide a dark and mysterious version of the Bud Powell classic "Un Poco Loco" keeping that Be-Bop Afro-Cuban vibe but adding that East of the Border darkness you'd expect from a sound recorded at the time the city was on the Cold War fault line.

It was 20 years ago today as the song says. Shiftless Shuffle, the longest running Jazz Party in London started.

Once a month at a secret (or not) London location that most Underground and totally London of London scenes puts on it's dancing feet and gets down to the most Afro of Cuban, the most UP! UP! UP! tempo drum crazed sounds around in any square yard of ground.
Perry Louis Jazz Dancer extra-ordinaire and organiser of the scene says when asked about what is this thing that's going on?
“We had energy. we didn’t do it to be cool or get noticed. We just wanted to dance and dance to music - Jazz music, Latin beats, Afro sounds!"

First came across "Atlas" on Soul Jazz's CD compilation "London Jazz Classics" from 1993. Very pleased to learn it's not a one-off and the whole LP is a top notch collection of latin-jazz. Tip of the hat too to the excellent mastering and pressing quality of the vinyl edition. Ian Hammerton
